What causes contacts to hurt?

Contact lenses give you a stylish look. But at the same time, you have to maintain them carefully. Improperly maintained contact lenses may cause irritation, itching, redness, pain, watering etc.. Besides, environmental causes, age and other medications of the patient may also make the contact feel uncomfortable.

How can you handle the contact lens?

You have to handle the contact lenses as per manufacturer’s instruction, to ensure that it does not hurt. It is very important to abide by the rules for taking care of contact lenses which are as follows:

  • You must wash and rinse your hands while using the lens. Dirty hands can make the lens dirty and cause infections in our eyes.
  • One should avoid using soaps and cold creams while touching the lens. The close contact of these substances with contact lenses has harmful effects on your eyes.
  • Another important thing is to use the fingertip for the contact lens. Do not use fingernails. The nails can tear the contact lens. It would be better to keep short and smooth fingernails.
  • When you are not using the contact lens, you should dip it properly in the lens solution.
  • You should wash the contact lens case on daily basis to ensure that your lens is completely dust-free.
  • You should use the same solution which your optometrist has advised. You should not use any other solution to “top up” or tap water.
  • You should maintain the disposal timing of the contact lens to avoid eye infections.
  • Do not clean two lenses at a time. Wash one lens and then wash the other one.
  • Take note of the expiry date of the lens. Throw it away if the expiry date is over.

We all need to take care of our contact lenses, so that they do not feel uncomfortable wearing or hurting the eyes. If the lens is not taken care of properly, an eye infection can occur. So, take care of the contact lens as much as you can.
